At Ashton Vale we are very proud of our achievements in the Bristol Reading Project over the past two years. So it is with great excitement that we share with you our entries for this years competition. By taking part in this project each class is able to explore and be inspired by a high quality text, taken from the UKLA awards shortlist. We hope you enjoy looking at our entries.

Penguin Class - Reception

We focussed on the book ‘Odd Dog Out’ by Rob Biddulph in Reception at Ashton Vale.
We have just been thinking about spring time and how it is different and similar to other seasons we have experienced, so pages 11 and 12 with the odd dog out through the seasons on her way to Doggywood, particularly interested the children. We spent some time thinking about characteristics and what our senses might explore in all the different seasons.
We talked a lot about ‘fitting in’. If someone looked different how might we react? Do we think of how it makes them feel?
The children designed their own Odd Dog Out, and thought about how would they like to celebrate their individuality if they were a Dachshund in the story. The children also learned how to pay attention to detail to complete spot the differences of various odd dog outs.
The children were asked to bring in an item of clothing that celebrates their individuality and allows them to stand out. We choreographed a dance based on showing the difference between life where there are no differences and a life where differences are celebrated. The beginning of the dance begins with very repetitive and mundane movements which mimics the other dogs in the story at the beginning. They all blend in with each other. It then dramatically builds to a party atmosphere where the children then are ‘dancing to a different beat’ as Odd Dog Out does on page 6. During this part the children rather excitedly take off their uniform top to reveal their item of clothing that says something about their individuality!
Unfortunately due to technical difficulties we have been unable to upload the full dance onto our website. Miss Vaughn has been able to take some photos to give you a flavour of the dance.

Robin Class - Year 1

Robin Class were very inspired by the theme of Space and Chris’ dream of becoming an astronaut. We decided to make our own large space rocket out of cardboard. We painted it different colours and used glitter to decorate it.
We had lots of discussions about how in the story Chris never gave up on his dream and managed to achieve it when he had grown up. The children wanted to share their own hopes and dreams for the future!
They each decorated a star with their personal hope and dream for the future and stuck it onto the space rocket. The space rocket represents their determination to never give up and always aim high.

Flamingo Class - Year 2

Flamingo Class have enjoyed exploring The Night Gardener by the Fan Brothers as their key text for literacy this term. We have also used this text as the basis for our cross-curricular topic this term.

We have also taken part in the Calmer Llama Trail organised by The Methodist Church and Bristol Shopping Quarter. The theme for this year's trail is Resilience and Determination, two attributes we thought related to the character of William in The Night Gardener. So we chose this as the theme for our llama.
On each of the leaves the children came up with tops tips for what to do when things are difficult. We thought of ideas for how we can help each other.
Look out for our llama on display in Broadmead or Cabot Circus over the Easter holidays. For more information visit www.bristolshoppingquarter.co.uk/Easter #BSQCalmerLlamas

For our Final Product for this topic the children looked at the trees around our school. We spent some time outside sketching the trees we could see. Then we copied our sketches into best and painted them with watercolours. Here are some of our amazing watercolours:
Then we painted some topiarys in the shape of an image that was important to us. We then combined both sets of trees to make one gigantic collage: Flamingo Class' Night Garden
