Year 3 were inspired by the story ‘Your Sincerely Giraffe.’ We created our very own made up animals, either an animal from the Artic or an animal from Africa- who then sent letters to either Penguin or Giraffe.
Just like in the story, we described what our made up animals looked like. Having written our letters we then drew our made up animal. We then gave our letter to someone else in the class and using only the information within the letter, they also drew the exact same animal- the comparisons were very amusing!
Year 3 also created a silhouette of the Giraffe and Penguin from the story and used PVA glue and pieces of black card to create the effect. We used watercolours and paint to create the background.

The children enjoyed finding out about the many more unknown animals in this book.
They choose an animal that they found interesting and produced some research around this, using the book and the internet.
Then the children created some animal poetry about their chosen animal using their research to inform their poems. They had to think about the animal’s appearance, personality and facts.
The children then paired their poems with portraits of the animals.

The children enjoyed finding out about the many layers under our streets.
They were particularly interested in the page showing how archaeologists study items found in order to learn about the past. This led to a discussion about what might be found under our school in a thousand years’ time.
The discussion moved on to what the children as individuals would like people to find that would show our lives.
Our competition entry shows a time capsule from each child showing items that represent who they are. In addition the children added further information in the form of a ‘Dear Future’ letter.

The children looked at the front cover and we predicted what the book might be about looking at the pictures and the title. We then further investigated the beautiful illustrations throughout the book to see if we could tell the story through these. We spoke about the White Fox and thought about how he might be feeling in the pictures.
Using the illustrations in pairs the children created their own diorama’s using different materials. They used shoe boxes and layered a forest. They decided on a background and the most likely surrounding that the illustrations give. The children spent a very long time perfecting their scenes and took great care in choosing the perfect spot for their fox. They thought carefully about the colours needed and the materials that would work best. The children are all extremely proud of their work and can’t wait to find out more about the white fox!
