Curriculum
Ashton Vale Primary School is committed to meeting the requirements of the primary curriculum through our Co Operative Values and ethos. We have updated our schemes of work to reflect the content, depth and challenge of the new curriculum in a broad and balanced way. The curriculum is taught to inspire and challenge, with the consideration of the needs of all learners. We aim for our curriculum to be exciting and to nurture a passion for learning, encouraging inquisitiveness and confidence in our pupils. Our objectives are taught through the skills of Building Learning Power (BLP). We encourage collaboration through use of Kagan structures in our lessons throughout the school. During the year we are constantly enriching our curriculum through a myriad of experiences. Each year the whole school takes part in Science Days, Arts Week, Health Week and Book Week to name a few. We foster speaking and listening by providing our children with continual opportunities for public speaking, both in class, assemblies and school productions. As a result children gain in confidence, consolidated by an annual trip to Mill on the Brue in Year 5. Children are also invited to join, and are supported with, the Children’s University.
Classes enjoy trips and visits out of school to enhance the curriculum. We also welcome Visitors to our school from historians (including Hrothgar the Viking!), Forrest School leaders, local farmers, librarians, RNLI members and parents and carers with skills to share.
Music and sport play key roles at our school, shown by the successes that we have had in sporting events – for example winning the football league and athletics county championships for small schools. Our Handful of Harmonies Community Trust Choir is enjoyed by a range of ages and abilities and our children also perform in our annual music concert. All children have the opportunity to learn the recorder and clarinet in Years 4 and 5, and a range of other musical instrument tuition is available to all. We thrive on the support and participation of our children and families, which can be seen at its best in our PTA events.
At Ashton Vale, English and maths lessons take place each morning, with science and the foundation subjects (history, geography, computing, religious education, physical education, art, Spanish (KS2) and design and technology) taking place during the afternoons. Opportunities to promote literacy and numeracy throughout the curriculum are always exploited, as well as cross curricular links. We also utilise our amazing grounds to take learning outside wherever possible.
Throughout the course of the year, all of the children will take part in whole school themed weeks. These happen at regular intervals throughout the year.

All children at Ashton Vale have a gift or talent, we split all children into their specialist areas and they will work in mixed year groups with different teachers on improving their higher level thinking skills. This happens once every long term. The areas we cover are: Linguistic, Logic, Computing, Nature, Kinaesthetic, Music and Scientific.
We also believe in giving the children a range of different after school clubs, these include: Various different sports (see PE page for a comprehensive list), Cooking, Nature, Arts, Drama, Music, Homework support and cribbage.
