Every Friday in Penguin class we will send out a short newsletter to keep you up-to-date with what we have been doing. Well, what a fantastic first week! We have been amazed with how calmly the children have settled in at Ashton Vale. We have spent the week getting to know each other and what we enjoy doing. We have also played some Sound Games to help prepare us for phonics and some getting to know you games. Today your child will bring home their first reading book, along with their reading record, an Oxford Reading Tree Character Book and some keywords. Please bring reading books and reading records into school every day so that we can read with the children throughout the week.
To begin with all children are given a book without words. This seems strange but it allows children to get familiar with the scheme’s characters and the format that the story takes. The pictures are full of detail and humour which allows your child to create their own story and develop their story telling skills. It also allows them to make connections between the story and pictures. You have also been given a keyword sheet with the characters names on to help the children become familiar with these along with their pictures in the character book. When each child is ready they will be given worded books; this is generally when they are confident with the story format and their phonic and initial keyword knowledge is strong.
In the Infants at Ashton Vale children are expected to read at least three times a week at home. We ask that this is recorded in reading records, we will check on a Friday and award gold stars to children who have read at least three times at home. We will change books on a Monday and a Friday if book bags are put in the changing book box in the classroom. If you would like to change your child’s reading book more regularly than this that is great and you are more than welcome to do so. Come and speak to us and we will be more than happy to show you where the books are and give you a helping hand if necessary.
Over the next few weeks there are several meetings that will help explain how we teach phonics and reading at Ashton Vale. These are a great opportunity to talk to us and find out more about how you can help your child at
- Parent Phonic Meeting Tuesday 23rd September at 2:30pm
- Parent Reading Meeting Tuesday 14th October at 2:30pm
- Reception Curriculum Meeting Wednesday 22nd October at 2:30pm
Next week all children will stay for lunch, which is very exciting! Don’t forget children swap morning or afternoon sessions. Please could children bring in a shoe box (or similar size box) next week that
we can decorate for their Special Box. You will hear more about this in next week’s
Sorry I said a short newsletter, I promise it normally is! The children have been brilliant during their first week at school and we can’t wait to see them next week!
Have a great weekend!
